B2-270 on Cabo Yellowfin

Greetings Accurate,

My Accurate Reels never cease to amaze me, with a small reel I have so much power, its unbelievable. I caught this 50 lb Tuna, Using my B2-270 with 30 lb test line and a 1 / 0 live bait hook I was surprised to say the least. Thanks again for the great innovations you guys have brought to the fishing industry, it will never be the same again.

Kind regards to the Accurate Family,

Two Super Cows for Wahoodad on the Intrepid

Intrepid Long Range Trip, San Diego, California

“Today's fish is one we all dream about when it comes to giant yellowfin tuna,” said the Intrepid report for November 22. “Charter master David Choate, ProStaffer for Accurate Reels, caught the fish he has been after for a long time today. All of us here on the Intrepid are very proud to have been a part of it. Congratulations Wahoodad! As for our day, two more super cows and several large cows to go along with half a dozen between 150 to 180 pounds!”

Chartermaster Choate wrote this: “I have a couple of things to say about this trip. I was out on the Intrepid on the December 26th-January 5th trip this last year. On that trip, I hooked a fish that took three backups, and finally it chewed through, after a three-hour battle. I thought that was it, my only chance ever at a fish like that. Then, I was fortunate enough to go again on the Red Rooster III with John Grabowski three weeks later. On my birthday on that trip, I got boiled on by the biggest tuna I had ever seen, and it cherry-picked my bait. Again, I thought, blew that chance! Never again.

“So, here we are again, and I did indeed get that 3rd chance. And this time I was able to overcome all obstacles, landing a very large Yellowfin Tuna, biggest one I've ever seen. Weight is only an estimate, not record shattering by any means. But a doggone good one. Next, it was a spectacular trip because of our 26 anglers, I'm pretty certain 25 of them have a personal best! We didn't all get cows or super cows, but we did an amazing feat in my eyes. I'm sure Kevin will have more to talk about on the way home.”

More details to come........

313# Yellow Fin Tuna on the ATD-12

He Called The Shot

Like Babe Ruth pointing toward the outfield when he stepped up to the plate, Mark Oliver of Poway called his shot just before an experience that resulted in the biggest tuna (313 pounds) on the lightest (60-pound) line that Bill Roecker could remember in the past 16 years.

“It was about two pm,” remembered Oliver at the Fisherman’s Landing scales November 14, “and I was on a long soak with my sardine. I told everyone around me I was gonna get bit, that I’d need a backup rig, and about four hours later I was gonna have a big fish on the Royal Star.

“When I did get bit we were down to our last 20 minutes before we were supposed to leave. I pushed the lever on my Accurate 12 into strike position, and the fish left. He damn near spooled me before we could get the backup. The guys thought I was fooling when I called for the backup, maybe because of what I’d said.

“We got the backup connected while the fish was still going. He had all but 50 yards of the original rig, and he took out over 300 yards on the backup. At one time we had about 1,000 yards of line out.

“I had the fish almost close enough to get the first rig back four times. He took a final run of about 10 minutes. We had a second backup ready, and that’s when we figured therer was about 1,000 yards out.

“I started bringing the fish back. When I was about 100 yards from the buoy on my rig, the fish died. I got my reel back, locked it down and pulled steady until we pulled him off the bottom. Half an hour later, I saw color. Then we got four gaffs into him and it was over.”

Mark Oliver’s fish was the first cow from the Baja coast this season. It weighed 313 pounds on the boat’s scales. It was gilled and gutted and stowed in the refrigerated seawater tank. Oliver wanted to tank Greg Tanji and the other deckhands who helped him during the ordeal. He won first place in the jackpot.

Skipper Tim Ekstrom was impressed with the performance of Oliver’s small Accurate ATD 12.

“The water just poured out of it and it still worked great,” noted the captain. The trip was ten days, with 24 anglers aboard including chartermaster Fred Fukanaga.

Mark Oliver said he used a 7/0 Mutu hook with his sardine bait, on Yo-Zuri 60-pound pink fluorocarbon and 60-pound blue Izorline with 80-pound Izorline Spectra on his Accurate ATD 12 reel, with a Calstar 660 H rod.

Hurricane Bank Cows on the Qualifier 105

Qualifier 105 docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 31 after a 15-day trip sponsored by The Rusty Hook, Seeker Rods and Accurate reels. Joe Crisci was the skipper, and owner Alex Masumoto of The Rusty Hook was aboard, as were Bob Michener for Accurate and Brian Porter for Seeker. There were four cows on the boat.

“The bites came in flurries,” said skipper Crisci, “with the big ones biting best from three in the afternoon until five or later. You had to be ready. There were small flying fish around, and we found some red crab in some of the fish. We had nice weather.”

Brian Porter of Downey won first place for a 236-pound yellowfin he bagged on the boat’s kite outfit with a double sardine bait rig. He said it had 130-pound Big Game line and 130-pound Big Game Spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.

“I used my Two by Four Super Seeker bait stick for everything else,” he remarked. “It was the only stick I used the whole time. It was a time of day thing for the bite, from three until closing time.

“Sardines were our only bait,” continued Porter. “Most of us fished with 100-pound line.”

Phil Lisi of Costa Mesa got a brace of cows, tuna over 200 pounds. He won second place for a 229.9-pounder, and he also got a 208.8-pound yellowfin.

“The big one fought like hell,” said Lisi. “He took me around the boat three times.”

Lisi said he fished with sardines on 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks. He used 130-pound Big Game fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 30 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.

Jeff Bruner of Westminister got third place for a 215.2-pound tuna. He said he also used the boat’s kite rig, with a squid bait on a pair of 14/0 Mustad 7691 hooks.

Tony Montez of Moreno Valley caught a 213-pound tuna on sardines under the kite, with the boat’s outfit.

San Diego Anglers Club Scores Limits

Mike Lackey brought his Vagabond home to Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 31 after a ten-day trip with the San Diego Anglers Club. There were 17 fishermen aboard, and they visited Guadalupe Island during a brief open period, and then went down to The Ridge.

“The water was up to 83 degrees at the 38 Spot,” noted Captain Mike. “We got out limits of tuna and there were a lot of small dorado, but the anglers agreed to release all of them. We only kept a few bigger ones. It was an excellent ten-day trip.”

Bob McKittrick of La Mesa won first place in the jackpot for a 97.8-pound yellowfin he bagged with a sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 80-poundSoft Steel Ultra line and 80-pound Big Game Spectra on an Accurate B2 600 N reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.

“I got him on in only 20 minutes,” he said. “I really like this new reel.”

Andy Cates docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing November 1 after the 14-day annual Winter Wanderlust trip of 14 days with 20 anglers. He had two very large tuna aboard, one he estimated at over 330 pounds.

“There weren’t many close to 200 pounds,” Cates told Bill Roecker as he cinched up the big one. “They were either 220 or more or they didn’t make it.”

John Wichmann of Oceanside bagged a brace of cows weighing 236 and 258 pounds. He fished sardines on 5/0 Super Mutu hooks. He fished with 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 7465 XH rod.
