Qualifier 105 Long Range Trip

The Accurate Open Charter on the Qualifier 105 departed San Diego on

April 17, 2009.  This trip was a ride down and ride back format.  Captain Joe Crisi headed the Qualifier 105 directly for the Hurricane Bank, over 1000 miles to the south.

 

The Accurate Charter Host for this trip was Jack Nilsen with assistance from Bob Michener.  Accurate provided Accurate reels matched to Calstar and Accurate rods

to target yellowfin tuna and wahoo.  Accurate also provided many prizes for daily derby’s including several Accurate reels.

 

The fishing started at the Hurricane bank and resulted in very good success on wahoo and many nice yellowfin tuna. After four days of Hurricane fishing on anchor and trolling we headed for Clarion Island to fish the “buffer zone” outside of Clarion.  We had good success on wahoo and yellowfin tuna in fairly tough weather conditions.  The fish were there, but the weather made fishing tough and uncomfortable.  Captain Joe made the decision the return to the Hurricane Bank and finish the trip there.  We again had good success for typical Hurricane bank fishing on anchor and troll.

Accurate Helps Old School to Striper Win

  We fished an open tournament this past weekend. The lake has mostly small fish, but the minimum size limit is 26". I brought my youngest Son (8 years old). We won first place in the Big Fish event, and took second in the overall. 80% of the field zeroed. These are pics of my Son bringing his fish up to the weigh-in with ALOT of embarrassed old-time locals that pitched a zero watching on. We only used giant 1 pound live Shad, and he caught this one on the 870-2 speed. With 30lb mono, he had to go "full throw" to stop this fish in the shallow brush-filled water. Although he is only 8, he is very smart, and knows more than everyone at the weigh-in about lever drag reels. He was on that rod, hit low gear, and went full throw before I could even open my mouth. NO BS!
I spend alot of time training both of my boys to take over the fishing world some day.
 
 
This was a full open event, not a youth event.

A fish to Remember in the Maldives Islands

During my recent guiding trip in the Maldives we caught all kinds of Gamefish from GT`s, Dogtooth & Yellowfin Tuna, Snapper, Grouper and a lot of Sailfish (60-130lb).

But on the 10th of March, in the late afternoon the ultimate fight was ready to transpire.

A huge 530lb Black Marlin took my small Island Bullethead Lure with a Williamson Ballyhoo rigged on 130lb Fluorocarbon Leader (My Favorite Sailfish Lure!).

My Accurate ATD30 limited Edition on my Custom Calstar Rod was the best tackle I could have ask for. More than 4 1/2 hours I battled this Giant on 30lb Momoi Line, before it finally gave up.
After enormous runs, followed with series of jumps and deep dives the Big Black came in wire length. After the 4th shot to wire, this Monster was leadered, and carefully brought aboard. After the Pics were taken, we released the fiesty Black who was still kicking with plenty of life.

301# Yellowfin - Royal Polaris/Accurate Trip

The Accurate Team returned to San Diego on February 26, 2009. Jack Nilsen and 23 fellow anglers fished aboard the Royal Polaris on an 18 day trip that departed from San Diego on February 8, 2009.

Captain Fank LoPreste skippered the trip. We were fortunate to have three Accurate Pro-Staff members along for support. Gary Lecroix, Brandon Kreutel, and Peter Heimbach are all Pro-Staff anglers and a great resource for Accurate.

Accurate brought 50 reel and rod combinations for the free use of all anglers throughout the trip. Many Accurate reels were won in “Daily Derby” fishing contests. The music rocked, the fish bit, and the GOOD TIMES ROLLED.

Mark Franketberker won his choice of an Accurate reel for his 301 pound yellowfin which was landed on his Accurate ATD 50W. Congratulations to Mark for a great fish and your new Accurate Reel to add your already extensive arsenal of Accurate Reels. Mark is already an all Accurate Angler and reel pleasure to have as part of our Accurate family.

We started our fishing at the Hurricane bank, targeting yellowfin tuna and wahoo. The fishing at the bank was very good and kept us busy for several days. Our next stop was outside of Clarion Island in an area around the island referred to as the “buffer zone”. This was “run and gun” fishing under bird schools and porpoise. We had excellent success in the “buffer zone” and then decided to depart for the Lucitania Bank outside Bahia Magdelana.

The area outside Bahia Magdelana also produced excellent fishing on yellowfin, wahoo, and giant squid. This was anchor fishing, drift fishing, and Kite fishing. All methods provided excellent results. The Royal Polaris uses Accurate ATD 50W and ATD 80 reels as the boats kite gear. These Accurate reels haveproved to be very reliable and effective as the standard Royal Polaris kite reels.

Accurate B2-50 lands cow and a half.

Fishing with his dad Carl, Mark Dorton of Woodland Hills bagged a 282-pound tuna on a sardine and an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook. He said he used 120-pound Ande fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a spanking new Accurate B-2 50 reel and a Calstar 7465 H rod.

Best Day Ever for Super Cows and Long Range

Best Supercow Day Ever?

The dust has mostly settled, but we’re still chasing some numbers for big fish here at FishingVideos.com. Any late-coming information will be shared here as it becomes available. 

Here are the scores, by the boat, from yesterday’s arrivals. It likely was the best day ever for the weighing of supercows, or tuna over 300 pounds.

 

American Angler had 12 tuna over 200 pounds, including four over 300.

Royal Star had three fish over 200 pounds, including a 335-pounder.

Red Rooster III had eight fish over 200 pounds, including a 311-pounder.

Intrepid caught 16 tuna over 200 pounds, including four over 300.

Excel had 24 tuna over 200 pounds, including six yellowfin over 300.

Independence found 19 cows, including four fish over 300 pounds.

 

Total for the day: 82 cows, including 20 supercows.

Not since Steve Loomis had a night for ten 300-pound fish in 1977 has a catch like this one arrived at the San Diego sportfishing docks. Six boats arrived and all of them had 300-pound tuna aboard.

“It was a winter night,” remembered Loomis at Fisherman’s Landing January 5, “and the cows, 300-pounders, were swimming all around us under the lights. It was chaos! Tommy Rothery gaffed one going by that went 326. I don’t know how many we got that way. We didn’t have all this good gear and bait. We got some on flying fish and some on wads of anchovies.”

Nacho Camarena of Oceanside had a 40-minute tuna that weighed 262 on the boat. He baited a mackerel on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 100-pound Izor Spectra on an Accurate 30 reel and a Calstar 7465 H rod.

“He had my nerves on edge the whole time,” Nacho said of his first cow. “He got it all but 100 yards before I put the hammer down, then he took me around the boat two times.”

Calstar rep Gary Gillingham of Duarte took home a 256-pounder that erred by slurping his mackerel on an 8/0 Owner Offshore hook. He used 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra with an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar (naturally) 6465 XXH rod. 

Rooster Cops A Three

Andy Cates docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing January 5 after a ten-day New Years Special trip to the lower banks.

The big fish was the jackpot-winning 311-pounder caught by Paul Palmer of Temecula, on his first long range trip. Paul baited a squid under the kite, fought the fish for an hour and beat his personal best by 276 pounds. He used the boat’s rig: 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on an Accurate 80 reel and a Calstar 760 XH rod.

“What I’ll remember,” said Paul, “was the total fight of the fish, how strong he was.”

Allen Lemberg of San Diego found a 255-pounder at the end of his 130-pound Izolrine and Izor Spectra. It ate a sardine under the balloon on a 5/0 Eagle Claw hook. He used and Accurate 50 reel and a Seeker 6465 XXH rod. 

Four Supercows For Intrepid

Kevin Osborne docked Intrepid at Pt. Loma Sportfishing January 5, following a ten-day Accurate trip with 23 anglers. Fishing on the lower banks was good, and the boat found four supercows and three more fish with kissing distance of 300 pounds. 

David Choate of Torrance nabbed second place for a 316-pounder. Dave is an Accurate/Seeker rep and nearly had a brace of supercows. His second fish weighed 299, and he had a 289 and a 223-pounder. He got his big one on a sardine and a 6/0 Gorilla hook. He fished with 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 130-pound Spectra backing on an Accurate 30 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. 

Mike Blumenfeld of Laguna Hills got a 224-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 Matsuo hook. He fished with 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 100-pound Line One Spectra. He used a new Accurate B2-30 reel and got the fish in 30 minutes.

The count for the trip: four over 300 pounds, 12 over 200, and three over 100 pounds

Twin Tunas for Roger Kang

The annual 12-day Seeker trip aboard the Shogun returned to Fisherman’s Landing December 10 guided by owner-skipper Norm Kagawa.

“We had a good day on the Finger Bank,” allowed Norm. “I think we got about eight cows.”

He was correct. The best fish was a 264.6-pound tuna caught by Roger Kang of Fresno, who also had a 232-pounder. He told Bill Roecker about the experience of catching the big one.

“He bit while I was up on the bow,” said Roger, “and he got wrapped on the anchor line. He got unwrapped, and we went back to the stern. He pulled me around and I got caught in a trolling strap and almost lost my rod. After an hour and 15 minutes, he came up on the port bow.”

Kang baited a mackerel on a 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hook, tied to 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One. He used an Accurate 50 reel and a Super Seeker XXXXH rod that was custom spiral-wrapped by former fish of the year angler Pat Doyle, who was also on the boat.

First Timer Scores Super Cow on ATD 30

The first boat in was the American Angler at Pt. Loma Sportfishing, with skipper Sam Patella. A remarkable fish was aboard. Sixteen-year-old Jake Abate of Charleston, SC took a handoff and then fought the 360-pound fish to gaff. He plays football and soccer at West Ashley High in Charleston, and fished with his father John.

There were four tuna over 300 pounds on the Angler. Jake’s was weighed at 375 on the boat, but on the dock scales it went 360. It wasn’t eligible for the jackpot because of the handoff. Jake said he fished a mackerel on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He used 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 100-pound Blackwater Spectra on an Accurate 30 reel and a Calstar 7465 M rod he borrowed from Nacho Camarena. Jack Nilsen was present and remarked
"It was the best fish yet on an Accurate reel."
