Per Jonasson is living the life for sure. He has established himself as one of the worlds trophy Halibut hunters catching numerous fish over 200 LBS and some over 300LBS in the Northern Boundaries of Norway. He is fishing in Gods country, there is very little pressure on the fish, and releasing 100% of these fish to fight another day.

He recently gave us his report for the 2010 season and this is what he had to say:

"Once again your reels proved themselves! Helping us catch big fishes on some really small reels, all of my biggest fishes there caught on BX400XN and I used the same one for the full season! So it was working hard for about 110 days in a row, and it worked smoothly and great all the time, and as you know I really push my reels having them on maximum brake most of the time.
The biggest fish we caught 2010 was 7,12 feet (217 cm) (375LBS) and we used a BX500XN on that one, that fisherman and the rest of my clients during the last season were really impressed of how well this reels performed faced with this tough fishing for big Halibut's.

Super Cows on Accurate's ATD TwinDrag Reels

Qualifier 105 docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing January 18 under Joe Crisci’s hand, after a trip into southern waters with 17 anglers aboard the Paul Lepore charter. There were two fish over 300 pounds aboard, and three over 200 pounds. Accurate Fishing Products was the primary sponsor.

Dick Allen of Fresno won first place for a 335.2-pound yellowfin.

“My best fish before was a 268-pounder I got on the Royal Polaris,” he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. “This one beat me up for two hours and 20 minutes. I’m 70, and he was a load. He came up on the starboard corner, thanks to a great crew.”

Dick said he baited a pair of sardines on 9/0 Mustad hooks tied to 100-pound Big Game line and 100-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 6465 XXXH rod.

Rookie Steve Benson won second place for a 328-pound tuna. He wrote about it and chartermaster Lepore put it on paper.

“My favorite fish came when I pinned on a sardine and let it fly one morning. The reward for a guy that was told he was in over his head was a 328-pound yellowfin tuna. I hooked this fish in the early morning and just about got spooled.”

Talking with Roecker on the dock, Benson said, “I hooked him in a gray bite, close, maybe 25 yards from the boat. He ran like hell, got all of the line and stopped. He stayed way out there, at about a 45-degree angle. The fight lasted an hour, and he came up on the starboard bow.

My best fish before,” continued Benson, was a 125-pounder I got in Hawaii on the troll.”

Two other cows came aboard. Bob Frank of Huntington Beach got a 235-pounder with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 100-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and 100-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.

Dan Harnes used a mackerel under the kite on a boat rig with 100-pound Big Game line and 100-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 6465 XXXH rod to take a 220.2-pound tuna.

Skipper Joe Crisci said this was the last trip for Qualifier 105 this winter. The boat will resume operations in April.

Seven's A Good Number

Royal Star arrived at Fisherman’s Landing December 21 after a ten-day trip with 14 anglers, regulars who wanted cows. The trip was sponsored by Accurate and Blackwater, with the chartermaster listed as Bart Ryder, and visited the Buffer Zone, where anglers decked seven cows.

The best fish was ineligible, as it was caught by crewman Greg Tanji. He hooked the 263-pound beast in the dark while the anglers were in the galley at dinner. It was a 30-minute oddball of a tuna that emptied his Accurate ATD 12 twice before it ran back at the boat.

“It came in at the surface, kicking with its tail threshing the water,” noted Tanji. “It bit a sardine on an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook. I was using Kevin Leong’s gear, with 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 130-pound Blackwater Spectra. The rod was a Calstar 770 XH.”

Bob Palatella of La Jolla won first place for a 220-pounder that bit his salami almost as fast as the bait hit the water in the grey light. He said he fished with a 6/0 Owner Gorilla hook on 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Blackwater Spectra on an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 7465 XH rod. The fish took him around the boat twice and came up ion the starboard corner after a 45-minute scrap.

Second place would have been a three-way tie between Kevin Leon of Aliso Viejo, Warren Sakamoto of Long Beach and Bob Pound of Lake Elsinore. They all had 214-pounders, but Warren doesn’t enter the jackpot. That made it easier, with Kevin and Bob splitting the second and third-place prize.

Kevin’s 214 came on a sardine and a 6/0 gorilla hook on 100-pound Izorline fluorocarbon tied to 130-pound Izorline Spectra, on an Accurate ATD 12 reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod.

Bob’s 214 bit a salami on a 20/0 Eagle Claw hook tied to 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline Spectra. He used an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 665 XH rod to do the job in 20 minutes. He also had a 210-pounder. Skipper Ekstrom got a shot of the event, and remarked, “Long Range veteran Bob Pound takes photo honors today leveraging one of his two jackpot winning "deuces" in like the old pro he is.”

The last cow, a 211-pound tuna, was caught by John Santaella of Santa Maria, on a sardine and a 9/0 Eagle Claw hook. John said he used 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline Spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 7465 XH rod.

“It was a half-hour fight,” said Santaella, “after he bit in the corner at dawn. He pulled like a mule!

“The weather was really nice,” continued Santaella. “The boat never rocked. We left our wine bottles on the table at night; no sweat.”

Scrappy In The Dark

Bob Michener of Oxnard caught his 39^th cow on an Accurate reel aboard Red Rooster III while fishing with skipper Andy Cates in the Buffer Zone. Anglers call Bob “Scrappy” from his former career as owner of a scrap metals business, but the term would apply just as well to a guy who’s battled that many tuna over 200 pounds. It’s easy to imagine how many tuna he went through that were smaller to arrive at that number.

If it weren’t enough of an achievement, Bob got his 282-pounder on a salami mackerel pinned on an old rusty hook.

“I don’t know what kind it is,” Michener told dock reporter Bill Roecker at H&M Landing December 10. “I got it from the wife of a buddy who passed away, and I welded the ring on myself.

“I tied it on because the sharks were around, but I got three fish with it and never was bothered by the sharks. I hooked the fish on the grind. He bumped it and it freespooled and he ate it then and spooled me.

“We put the backup rod on, and when I saw the spectra getting down to the bottom of the spool I was afraid it would dig in and I started yelling to throw the rod in. It went in and I got into the skiff just before sunset. The rest of the fight was in the dark.

We got to the buoy and the line was slack, so I reeled up and it came tight. He towed us around in circles for a half hour, and then I fought him at the side of the skiff for another half-hour.  He was the strongest fish I ever fought.”

Scrappy won first place for his tuna. He said he tied the rusty hook on 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor spectra. He used an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod.
