Big Al Scow’s annual “Fisherman’s Pals & Gals” trip returned to Fisherman’s Landing May 28 after a 15-day Excel trip with 27 anglers and skipper Justin Fleck at the helm. The trip found nine tuna over 200 pounds at the Hurrican3 Bank, and scored limits of wahoo.

“The wahoo weren’t as bad this time as they were last trip,” said Justin to dock reporter Bill Roecker. “They weren’t biting everyone off all the time. The tuna fishing was better.”

Gary Gillingham of Accurate won third place for a 206-pounder. He got that one with a sardine on a 6/0 Owner Offshore hook, 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra and Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 770 XXXH rod.

Ted Kamenecka of Palm Beach Gardens, FL bagged a 246-pound non-eligible tuna. It fought for two hours, he said, and was his best fish ever. He used a 6/0 ringed Gorilla hook on 130-pound pink Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Super Seeker 6364 XXXXH rail rod to take his best fish in two hours.

Roland Reesby of San Clemente spent two hours one day pulling on a 204-pounder. It bit on a flying fish under the kite, on a 12/0 Mustad offset hook tied to a Basil topshot of 130-pound Momoi. He used 130-poundIzorline spectra on a Tiagra 50 W reel and a Calstar 755 XH rod.

Chris Perez of Westchester caught a 201-pound yellowfin tuna after a scrap of an hour and a half. His best tuna ate a chunk on an Owner 8/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Super Seeker 2 x 4 rod.

“On Our Way Home”

“We finished up our trip last night,” wrote Excel skipper Justin Fleck May 24, “and are now on our way home. Not only was tuna fishing again good in the morning, but the afternoon was steady as well. The final well in the center was topped off at dark so we broke down gear and called it a trip. Gary Gillingham of Accurate Reels got a 206 pounder. All three fish were caught just before dark. What a great trip! There were tons of wahoo and lots of big tuna for everyone.”

Nine Over 300 Pounds

“Even My Hair Hurt”

“I feel excellent,” remarked Royal Polaris skipper Billy Santiago Jr. to dock reporter Bill Roecker on the way from the boat to the Fisherman’s Landing office April 1. He wasn’t joking. He’d just brought in nine yellowfin tuna over 300 pounds, fish he weighed on the boat near Clarion Island, where the catch was made.

“I learned a lot from Frank (LoPreste) and Steve Loomis over the years,” continued Billy. “We got one more that I’ll weigh to see if it makes 300 (it didn’t). “Six of the nine we got came on the kite with salami mackerel baits. We only had a few flying fish frozen baits, and they were really after those. They bit every one that went out. They were bitin’!”

Steve Chambless of Long Beach popped a 310-pounder on a sardine bait and a 7/0 Mustad Demon circle hook on 130-pound Momoi line and 130-poundLine One spectra. He used an Accurate ATD 50 reel modified by Cal Sheets and a Phenix 700 XXX rod he wrapped himself to take the fish in two hours.

Ted Patrick of Garden Grove got a “little” 267-pounder in 45 minutes, after it bit a mackerel on a 6/0 Owner Super Mutu ringed hook tied to 130-pound Yo-Zuri line and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 770 H rod.

Bob Michner's 40th Accurate Cow

Accurate Pro-Staffer, Bob Michener, is an amazing Long Range tuna fisherman. On his last Red Rooster trip he landed his 40th "Cow Tuna" on an Accurate Reel. All of the 40 were landed using an Accurate Reel.

Bob was with Jack Nilsen on the Qualifier 105 when the first Accurate ATD reels were tested and perfected. Bob immediately recognized that these Accurate ATD 2 speed, Twin-Drag, reels were a serious step up over all other reels. At seventy-something Bob is one of the most astute Long Range fisherman around. Bob shares his knowledge and love of fishing with all who are fortunate to fish with him.

Accurate friend Dave Fender was recently in Puerto Vallarta fishing on his boat "Great White" and put the screws to some quality yellowfin tuna. His crew consisted of the Marla Sportfishing "Osuna Brothers".They had several nice fish including some cow size (200lb+) fish that gave their tackle a work out. We appreciate the feedback and nice words.

Per Jonasson is living the life for sure. He has established himself as one of the worlds trophy Halibut hunters catching numerous fish over 200 LBS and some over 300LBS in the Northern Boundaries of Norway. He is fishing in Gods country, there is very little pressure on the fish, and releasing 100% of these fish to fight another day.

He recently gave us his report for the 2010 season and this is what he had to say:

"Once again your reels proved themselves! Helping us catch big fishes on some really small reels, all of my biggest fishes there caught on BX400XN and I used the same one for the full season! So it was working hard for about 110 days in a row, and it worked smoothly and great all the time, and as you know I really push my reels having them on maximum brake most of the time.
The biggest fish we caught 2010 was 7,12 feet (217 cm) (375LBS) and we used a BX500XN on that one, that fisherman and the rest of my clients during the last season were really impressed of how well this reels performed faced with this tough fishing for big Halibut's.

Super Cows on Accurate's ATD TwinDrag Reels

Qualifier 105 docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing January 18 under Joe Crisci’s hand, after a trip into southern waters with 17 anglers aboard the Paul Lepore charter. There were two fish over 300 pounds aboard, and three over 200 pounds. Accurate Fishing Products was the primary sponsor.

Dick Allen of Fresno won first place for a 335.2-pound yellowfin.

“My best fish before was a 268-pounder I got on the Royal Polaris,” he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. “This one beat me up for two hours and 20 minutes. I’m 70, and he was a load. He came up on the starboard corner, thanks to a great crew.”

Dick said he baited a pair of sardines on 9/0 Mustad hooks tied to 100-pound Big Game line and 100-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 6465 XXXH rod.

Rookie Steve Benson won second place for a 328-pound tuna. He wrote about it and chartermaster Lepore put it on paper.

“My favorite fish came when I pinned on a sardine and let it fly one morning. The reward for a guy that was told he was in over his head was a 328-pound yellowfin tuna. I hooked this fish in the early morning and just about got spooled.”

Talking with Roecker on the dock, Benson said, “I hooked him in a gray bite, close, maybe 25 yards from the boat. He ran like hell, got all of the line and stopped. He stayed way out there, at about a 45-degree angle. The fight lasted an hour, and he came up on the starboard bow.

My best fish before,” continued Benson, was a 125-pounder I got in Hawaii on the troll.”

Two other cows came aboard. Bob Frank of Huntington Beach got a 235-pounder with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 100-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and 100-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.

Dan Harnes used a mackerel under the kite on a boat rig with 100-pound Big Game line and 100-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 6465 XXXH rod to take a 220.2-pound tuna.

Skipper Joe Crisci said this was the last trip for Qualifier 105 this winter. The boat will resume operations in April.
