Fishing AccuBraid with Brandon Hayward

FEATURE REPORT BY BRANDON HAYWARD/WON

DANA POINT — Fishing all comes down to conditions, especially when it comes to winter calico bass fishing.

The first real storm of the winter was set to hit southern California right before this writer and Ben Secrest of Accurate decided to try and sneak in a local bass trip with what sounded like a simple goal on paper — get that one big bite from a trophy local calico. .........more, click here.

B2-50 Scores a Cow for Lew Hurlbutt

Last Boat In

San Diego, California Long Range

Norm Kagawa docked his Shogun December 23 at Fisherman’s Landing after the 13-day Will Fish Tackle charter. Co-owner Jack Hill was aboard as chartermaster, and the trip produced seven cows, or tuna over 200 pounds.

“We had good fishing,” said Norm, “with a variety of methods working. Afternoons were better than the mornings.”

Here’s what the Shogun’s Internet log said December 20:

“Yesterday the Shogun passengers and crew said farewell to Hurricane Bank for 2008. Once again we landed tuna over 200# with the average a little smaller than the day before. The kite had a hot spell in the afternoon when the baits wouldn't sit for 5 minutes before a strike. We emptied the slammer of the last of the sardines to make way for RSW tuna, and the wahoo put on a show boiling on all the bait around the boat.

“All in all the fishing was good every day for tuna and wahoo and the bite varied from day to day. Sometimes it was the kite and other times it was strictly a fly line bite. Right now we are traveling home in bumpy seas but all of our fishing days were in fair seas and light winds. Only yesterday did the kites for moderate winds come out. The Shogun will be back out in early January, the crew and our staff in the office thank you all for fishing with us this year, and hope to see you back on the Shogun soon in the New Year.”

Lew Hurlbutt of Tehachapi won the first spot in the jackpot for his 229-pound tuna.

“He got tail-wrapped,” said Lew, “so I brought him to gaff in ten minutes.”

Lew said he baited a sardine on a 5/0 Super Mutu ringed hook, and used 100-pound blue Izorline and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a new Accurate B-2 50 reel and a Seeker Black Steel rod that appeared to be a 6364 XXXH model.

Merry Christmas! RP Finds 68 Cows

Roy Rose docked Royal Polaris at Fisherman’s Landing, San Diego, California on December 23, just in time for Christmas. His 16-day Izorline trip with chartermaster Howard Hada of Cerritos appeared to be the third-best ever, with the counting still going on as fish came out of the last RSW hold. When it was over Roy’s anglers had 68 cows from the Hurricane Bank.

“The afternoons were best for cow fishing,” said Roy. They bit from about 2:30 until dark. They bit on the kite, sardines, chunks, whatever. In the morning they’d bite around dawn, and then disappear.”

Maury Newton of Orange had six cows: 203#, 208#, 226#, 205#, 211#, 202#.  He said he fished with sardines on 3/0 Gorilla hooks. He used 100-pound fluorocarbon leader and 100-pound Line One Spectra on a new Accurate B-2 30 reel and a Calstar 765 H rod.

160# Yellowfin on the New TwinSpin 50

San Diego Long Range Report by Bill Roecker

Ken Cirks used another new Calstar rod with the guides underneath, to go with his new Accurate TwinSpin 50 spinning reel, and caught a 160-pound tuna. He said he was hoping for a cow, and had no doubt the spinning reel could handle a big tuna. He fought the fish with a harness hooked to the reel seat of the new rig.

The newest addition to the Accurate Boss Series of reels is the new Boss Extreme reels featured in a B2-30 and B2-50 sizes for those fishermen looking for a lot of reel in a small package.

Accurate has spent countless hours researching the needs of anglers at shows throughout the country as well as time spent on the water putting your feedback to the test. Our initial idea of Small reels – Big Fish has become more wide spread throughout the country with anglers using smaller tackle to conquer the bigger Gamefish. With that type of mentality growing in popularity, the B2-30 and B2-50 were developed for those anglers in mind. These reels have standard features that include our patented Accurate TwinDrag, Stainless Steel Gears, AccuCast Casting system, Class 5 ABEC bearings, and are made out of 6061 T-6 aircraft aluminum for added strength and lightweight.

These Boss Extreme reels also have a harden 17-4 spool shaft for increased strength and pulling power. The oversized 17-4 stainless steel gear system gives the angler the ability to take one more crank even at the most critical stage of the battle. With 30 pounds of built in drag and standard harness lugs, these reels are ready to snap in for the long run. The B2 Extremes have an oversized reel clamp with beefier studs for a solid connection to the rod. For the anglers that do not use harness lugs we have designed replacement harness lug blanks for a cleaner, smoother look.

1000+ Pound Black Marlin on ATD-130

In late November a private fishing crew from the Cairns Bluewater GFC headed out to St Crispins reef, on the outer GBR, off Cairns. Skipper Wayne Tuni is a newcomer to heavy-tackle gamefishing but with the guidance of very experienced local deckie Craig Wyatt (known as 'Wizzy') they loaded Wayne's 32ft Caribbean Pay Back with gear and headed out on a 4-day trip destined for action. They were joined by Craig Watson, a visiting Victorian lure maker who keen to give his Blue Dog lures a swim. Craig also brought his 10-year old son Thomas. Watson has represented Australia in weightlifting at the Olympics and, as the designated angler, was keen to try a large black on stand-up 60kg.

Fishing was slow but by the 3rd morning they had caught a 150lb black and several mackerel - providing a good practice run in case the big girl eventually turned up. Then, at 5.30pm on the 3rd day, she did, indeed, make an appearance. Craig's long-headed 'Cuban' lure, running out the back in the shotgun position, disappeared in a boil, followed soon after by a huge black marlin crashing through the surface and into the sky. Craig was hooked-up!

The outfit was a custom-built Laurie Casey 60kg rod with a 2-speed 80W Accurate reel that had been customised by local reel wizard Jack Erskine.
Craig fished the reel with 22.5kg of strike drag and, with that sort of pressure, they had the fish to the boat in 20 minutes. Wizzy took the leader, the fish was tagged and the catch was accomplished - but then the fish took off and he had to release the leader or it would have broken. Watson was keen to retrieve the lure (to hang on his wall) and to cut the fish off with minimal leader, so they continued the fight to bring it back again. This proved much harder the second time and 45 minutes into the fight, Craig decided he needed more drag. He pushed the lever to full 'sunset' drag and struggled to stand against the punishing pressure of 34kg's of drag. To keep him safe - and in the boat - Wyatt tied a safety rope between the flybridge ladder and Watson's Black Magic harness. Eventually, after 1hour and 20min, they haul the fish alongside, grab the lure back and set the big black free. By this time the crew had attracted a crowd of spectators and Capt Bill Billson, watching the action from the bridge of Viking II, called the fish at 1050lb.

Red Rooster Long Range Accurate Trip

The annual Accurate & Red Rooster 3,  8/11 day trip, returned to San Diego November 26, the day prior to Thanksgiving.  It was a full load of anglers and crew.  Twenty-four anglers were provided with Accurate Reels, Calstar and Seeker Rods, all outfits were loaded with Spectra type braid line. The Spectra lines were provided by Izoreline, Blackwater, and Line One.  The outfits were provided free and were for the use of anglers for the entire trip.

This trip started out on the slow side, but ended with a fury of big tuna fishing.

One of the “cows” turned out to be a “super cow” weighing in at 353.7 pounds at the Red Rooster landing scale.

The giant yellowfin was landed by lady angler Judy Montague using an Accurate ATD 30, Clastar custom rod and Blackwater braid line.  Judy will tell you herself that the fish was a hand off from a fellow angler.  I can witness that Judy did at least 80 percent of the work on the fish and received only the normal type of crew help that any angler would get on such a massive fish.  Congratulations to Judy for landing what is probably the largest yellowfin tuna landed using an Accurate ATD 30 reel.  The fish may also be the largest YFT ever landed by a lady angler with the San Diego long- range fleet.

Accurate and the Red Rooster III will offer the same very popular trip next year.

We will add one day to the start of the trip ( 9/12 day) and still return to San Diego the day prior to Thanksgiving.  Contact the Red Rooster office for details and booking.   619 224-3857      www.redrooster3.com

The following input is from Bill Roecker and can be viewed on his website

www.fishingvideos.com

Andy Cates slid into the Red Rooster III’s slip November 26 after the 11-day (eight with a flyback option) Accurate trip with reel developer Jack Nilsen. Jack exercised his option to fly home, as did most of the 26 anglers.

Cates took the group to the southern banks off Baja, anchored on one of the southernmost, and got the first cows to come from the area this year. He called the fleet, but only Royal Star was in position to take advantage of the discovery. Cates ended his trip with nine cows, including the 353.7-pound super cow landed by Judith Montague of Cardiff.

Ken Pickett of La Mesa won first place for a 292-pound whopper he got with a mackerel on a 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One Spectra backing. He used an Accurate 50 W reel and a six and a half-foot Calstar rod.

“I had a good time,” he said of the fight. “It lasted an hour and 45 minutes.”

Allison Shuman of Venice won second place for the 247.5-pound tuna she hooked, fought and landed after it bit on a sardine on a ringed 6/0 Super Mutu hook. She used 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a topless Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

“My best fish before was 125 pounds,” said Allison. I fought this one in the harness and I had to get in the skiff at one point. He bit, he ran, he went down and took me around the boat once.

“Then he got wrapped on the anchor. Andy pulled it part way up and we went in the skiff to get it off. I used a balloon to get the hookup.”

Gary Gillingham of Duarte got a 234.7-pounder to win third place.

Stas Velonakis found a 217.5-pounder.

Red Rooster III jackpot winners display their super tuna at H and M LandingKevin Leong had the fourth-best qualifying fish at 231 pounds. Since there was no best troll fish, he won a jacket. Kevin said he used a mackerel on a 5/0 Gorilla hook on 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Blackwater Spectra backing on an Accurate 12 reel and a Calstar 6465 XXH rod. He also had a 217-pounder.

Calvin Benton of Oakland pulled in a 205-pounder with a sardine on a 7/0 Eagle Claw hook. He fished with 100-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, 100-pound Spectra, an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 655 XXH rod.

Miles Yamaguchi of Riverside got a 201.6-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline Spectra backing. He used an Accurate 50 reel and a Yo’s custom Calstar 6460 XXH rod.

That leaves only the super cow to account for, something already done by Jack Nilsen. It’s repeated here so any newcomers can find the information with that of the rest of the catch.

“She fought it the normal way—did a nice job,” said Jack, “without any undue assistance from the crew. Judy has fished with us before, and this tuna came on an Accurate ATD 30 on Blackwater 100-pound hollow Spectra, and 130 Blackwater flourocarbon shock leader. The rod was a Calstar 6465 XXH, and it bit on a mackerel on an Owner Gorilla 6/0 hook.

“Her fish is the best yellowfin tuna caught so far on an Accurate 30,” said Jack. “It was a pretty damn nice trip, as it all turned out.”

355# Yellow Fin on ATD-30

San Diego Long Range: Jack Nilsen of Accurate Reels reports that his recent 11-day trip (fly-back option from Cabo San Lucas) aboard the Red Rooster III produced the largest tuna ever caught on one of his Accurate 30 reels. He said Capt. Andy Cates found the school of big tuna and called in many of the other fleet boats from San Diego. The Royal Star with Capt. Randy Toussaint arrived, and one of his anglers, Dennis Williams of Carlsbad, landed a tuna that weighed 355 pounds on the boat's scale. If it weighs in at that at the dock Wednesday morning, it won't be any kind of record, but it will be one of the Top 10 yellowfin ever landed. On the Red Rooster III, Judy Montague of San Diego was handed a hooked tuna, one that she then fought for a long, long time. Hand-offs are not eligible for world record status or even jackpot status on the boat. “She fought it the normal way, did a nice job without any undue assistance from the crew,” Nilsen told Bill Roecker of FishingVideos.com.
